Doctor Who news: Captain Jack returns in Revolution of the Daleks!
By James Aggas
Jack is Back! The Doctor’s old friend Captain Jack Harkness will return in the upcoming Doctor Who festive special Revolution of the Daleks!
It’s been rumored about for a while, but now it’s official: John Barrowman will return as Captain Jack Harkness in the upcoming Doctor Who festive special, Revolution of the Daleks! And this time, he’s meeting the Thirteenth Doctor!
When we last saw Captain Jack in Fugitive of the Judoon, it was a complete surprise, to say the least. His role in the episode was small, and while he got to meet the Doctor’s current companions, he wasn’t reunited with his old friend. But Jack hinted that, when the Doctor needs him, he’ll be there.
And with the Doctor imprisoned by the Judoon (as seen at the end of The Timeless Children), it definitely looks like she needs his help. Especially with an army of Daleks to face. You can get a (very, very quick) tease of his return in the clip below.

Coming back
Unsurprisingly, John Barrowman is extremely excited about his return.
"Putting on Jack’s coat and setting foot back on the set of Doctor Who was just like going back home. It’s always thrilling to play Captain Jack. He’s a character very close to my heart who changed my life, and to know the fans love him as much as I do makes his return even sweeter."
The fact that they’re formally announcing his return implies that Jack has a much bigger role to play in this episode. While his return in Fugitive of the Judoon was undoubtedly a welcome one, and a brilliant surprise, a key reason why it worked so well was that his involvement in the episode was relatively minimal, allowing for just enough screentime to make it work. Paul McGann’s return in the minisode The Night of the Doctor worked as a surprise for very much the same reason.
So we’re certainly excited about his return in Revolution of the Daleks. What role will Jack play in the episode? Will he help to rescue the Doctor from her imprisonment? Or will he need to help her friends against the Daleks? We can’t wait to find out.
