Giancarlo Esposito teases more Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian’s future
Giancarlo Esposito thinks fans of The Mandalorian will see a lot more of his character in future seasons…and we aren’t complaining about it.
The Mandalorian is halfway through its second season, and based on the final moments of last week’s episode, it’s safe to assume we’ll be seeing more of Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon in the back four. “The Siege” saw the villain successfully planting a tracker on Mando’s ship, meaning it’s only a matter of time before Mando and the Child have a run-in with him and his Darksaber.
Despite only appearing in a handful of episodes so far, Moff Gideon has proved a formidable villain, and seeing as he’s played by the guy who portrayed Gus Fring on Breaking Bad, is anyone surprised? It sounds like Moff Gideon may become a more permanent fixture in the Star Wars universe too. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Esposito suggested that fans could see a lot more of his character moving forward. “I have a feeling you’ll see more of me next season,” Esposito said. “More than likely you’re going to see a lot of Moff Gideon.”
The actor was quick to clarify that he wasn’t giving away spoilers, just making an assumption based on his own knowledge of the show and its storylines. If he’s right, though, Moff Gideon could eventually become one of the franchise’s major villains, similar to Darth Vader and Kylo Ren.
“I can’t be sure of that, but it seems as though this iconic journey that they want you to feel it,” he added. “I think you’re going to start to see other storylines start to creep in. When we start to realize there’s such a deep connection [between the show’s storylines and] the rest of the galaxy and what’s really happening. Maybe you’ll get an inkling of what he wants.”
As far as what Moff Gideon wants, “The Siege” finally revealed why the Imperial officers are on the hunt for the Child: His blood is full of Midi-chlorians (although all the scientist says in the episode is that his “M-count” is high). What exactly the remnants of the Empire are hoping to achieve with that remains to be seen, but Esposito guessed that Moff Gideon might want to use them to become more like Vader. “It’s any adult manchild’s dream come true to be equated in a certain way with Darth Vader.”
He’s not wrong on that one. And given that Moff Gideon is already pretty terrifying already, there’s a good chance he’d surpass Vader if he was able to use the Child’s blood to become more powerful in the Force. That’s something we’d love to see, but it’s unlikely to happen before season 2 is through.
Fingers crossed Esposito is right and the third season of The Mandalorian delivers even more Moff Gideon when it finally arrives.
