Rosario Dawson is game to play Ahsoka Tano again

Rosario Dawson got to fulfill a dream of hers by portraying Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian…and she’s game to do it again.

The most recent episode of The Mandalorian brought a fan-favorite character from The Clone Wars to life in live-action, and it’s all longtime Star Wars fans have been talking about. Ahsoka Tano, Anakin’s Padawan from the animated series The Clone Wars, offered some new insights into Baby Yoda’s — or should we say Grogu‘s — past. And the actress who took on the role fulfilled a dream of hers in bringing the character to the small screen.

Way back in February of 2017, Rosario Dawson responded to calls for her to play Ahsoka with the enthusiasm of any Star Wars fan. Taking to Twitter, she wrote, “Ummmm… yes please?! #AhsokaLives #AhsokaTano #StarWars.”

Evidently, the powers that be at Lucasfilm and Disney+ were heard about it and were happy to oblige her, once they realized it made sense within The Mandalorian‘s timeline. “When I spoke with [showrunner Dave Filoni] about it and they started talking about doing this show and he did the math of what year it was,” Dawson told StarWars.com, “he kind of revisited that idea of me for the character, and with my age versus where she would be, and said, ‘This is actually a feasible thing.’”

From there, The Mandalorian creators got to work thinking about how to bring Ahsoka’s character to life. Ashley Eckstein had become the indisputable voice of the character after her work on Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. But the live-action version would have to be a little different. “Ashley did such an incredible job and I know how the fans feel about her, and I know how she feels about this character and how much she’s given to it,” Dawson said. “And I know that it’s such a different feeling and space to bring this character that people have loved for so many years into live-action. I really, really, really wanted it to be something that people could enjoy and get into as another Ahsoka story.”

Dawson’s appearance in “The Jedi” set aside any doubts that she might not be the right person for the role: she slayed it, and has many fans wondering if we’ll see her again. She did ask after the whereabouts of Grand Admiral Thrawn at the end, which sounds like something the show will follow up up on. Another possibility is that she could get her own spinoff series.

There’s nothing confirmed one way or the other yet, but Dawson is definitely game to reprise the role:

"I mean, I would love that opportunity,. I think it’s so cool that this show exists. I think it’s so cool that I got to show up and give information about this character, the Child, that everyone’s loved so much. You know, that she was not so much showing up as a cameo, but really being a storytelling device for new fans that have fallen in love with yet another new character that we’re getting to see grow. Little Grogu is just amazing."

After how much excitement Dawson’s turn as Ahsoka generated, it’s hard to see why Lucasfilm wouldn’t bring the character back in some capacity.

Still, fans will have to wait and see if anything comes from the calls for more Ahsoka. Dawson expressing interest worked the first time; perhaps it will work again.
