Critics agree that Wonder Woman 1984 is the uplifting movie we need at the end of this weird, upsetting, no-good year.
The premiere date of Wonder Woman 1984 has been moved several times. But now, we finally have a firm date: the superhero sequel will land on December 25, Christmas Day, on both HBO Max and in theaters. In the meantime, some members of the press have had the opportunity to watch the movie early. If you weren’t already excited for the sequel, this might change things, because early impressions are incredibly positive!
Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 continues Diana Prince’s story. Many decades after the original movie (remember that it was set during World War I), as she takes on business tycoon Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Cheetah (Kristen Wiig).
Erik Davis, the managing editor at Fandango, was very happy with the movie and hailed at as one of the best DC sequels so far. He even says he was in tears by the end:
I’m so happy to report that #WW84 is an absolute blast from start to finish. An exceptional compliment to the first film, it’s stuffed w/ heart, hope, love, action, romance & humor. @PattyJenks, @GalGadot & team delivered one of DC's best sequels. I was in tears when it ended. pic.twitter.com/ivPkBFmehd

Brandon Davis of ComicBook.com talked about the performances. Between this and his role as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, Pedro Pascal’s stock continues to rise; our Oberyn Martell is a bona-fide star!
Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig are the highlights of #WonderWoman1984 for me.

Pascal goes ALL IN on a wild portrayal of Max Lord, a conflicted but vile villain.
Wiig's Cheetah evolution throughout the movie is heartbreaking yet epic. We need more! #WW84 pic.twitter.com/hBIUDkXCFN
Dorian Parks, editor over at Geeks of Color, also praised Pascal and Wiig:
I had the chance watch #WonderWoman1984 early!

I loved the first film and I can confidently say the sequel take everything to another level! Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig absolutely kill it as Maxwell Lord and Cheetah.

One of the main themes throughout the impressions is how the movie is a perfect way to close out a strange year. Apparently, it’s very heartwarming, hopeful and sends a lovely message.
I was lucky enough to be among the first to (finally!) get to screen Wonder Woman 1984. I adored it. The first Wonder Woman is my favorite of the modern DC films, and #WW84 makes all the smart next steps, telling a very human and very beautiful story for Diana Prince. pic.twitter.com/vzr2mZXIKg

Huge news: Wonder Woman 1984 is fantastic! The story is excellent & has a great, timely message; it packs in a ton of surprises; and amazing work is done with both Cheetah & Max Lord (Wiig & Pascal are both stellar). Get hyped, because it's the real deal. #WonderWoman1984 #WW1984 pic.twitter.com/9UQLyxn3gx

I saw #WonderWoman1984 yesterday. It was a lot of fun and has a very heartwarming and hopeful message that, frankly, we really need this year. pic.twitter.com/eWNS71VfsS

The highest compliment I can pay #WW84 is that it at times felt like a lost film from the Richard Donner era of superhero films. Plenty to love in this one. I have some exciting stuff cooking with the cast and @PattyJenks. Stay tuned! pic.twitter.com/aB9H7EA8XH

It sounds like it’s going to be a thrilling ride! 2020 has been a slow year for blockbuster movies, but hopefully, Wonder Woman 1984 can help us end on a high.
If you’re unable to attend a movie theater, Wonder Woman 1984 will also be available for streaming on HBO Max. Not only that, but it will become the first-ever title on the streaming service available in 4K Ultra HD, HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. That’s as close to movie theater quality as you can get without actually being there.
As always, you’ll need a supported device to stream in this super-high quality. New devices are always receiving support, but at the moment, you can watch in the best quality on the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, Amazon Fire TV Cube (& 4K Fire TV Edition smart TVs), Apple TV 4K, Chromecast Ultra, AT&T TV, and supported Android TV devices. Should you have any of these, you can enjoy Wonder Woman 1984 in glorious quality!
However, if you were planning on streaming, it’s worth mentioning that HBO Max is no longer offering a one-week free trial, meaning you will be required to pay the subscription fee if you want to watch. Presumably, it’s to prevent fans from subscribing with a trial just to watch the one thing they’re interested in and then canceling once they have. We’ve all tried it.
Merry Christmas, Wonder Woman 1984 fans!
