A Boba Fett spinoff is coming? Temuera Morrison responds to rumors

The Mandalorian star Temuera Morrison responds to reports that Disney is going forward with a spinoff featuring his character, Boba Fett.

Star Wars fans have been awaiting the return of Boba Fett to the franchise for a long time, and it finally happened in the newest episode of The Mandalorian, “Chapter 14: The Tragedy.” The episode was an emotional roller coaster, but I’m sure one thing we can all agree on is the awesome and triumphant return of Boba! And now, Fett actor Temuera Morrison has responded to reports saying Disney is considering a Boba Fett spinoff series.

Boba Fett was played by Jeremy Bulloch in his original appearance in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and again in Return of the Jedi (1983). In the prequel trilogy, we saw Boba as a child alongside his father Jango Fett, who was played by Temuera Morrison, the same actor who now plays Boba in The Mandalorian.  The casting makes sense since Boba is the genetic clone of his father.

In typical Star Wars fashion, it’s all a bit confusing! His return wasn’t the best-kept secret in the world, having been first revealed earlier this year.

Fans pretty much universally loved Morrison’s appearance as Boba Fett, just like they loved Rosario Dawson’s debut as a live-action Ahsoka Tano; it’s pretty rare for Star Wars fans to have that kind of unity nowadays. In fact, there’s already talk of Temuera Morrison reprising his role for a potential spinoff. Most notably, reliable industry rag Deadline hinted that a spinoff would soon begin production.

For Morrison’s part, he told The New York Times that he would be happy to reprise his role, although if he’s already signed up to film something, he’s not saying. “I’m just going to have to wait and see,” he mused. “I think a lot of it depends on how things go with this season, but I don’t really know. I wanted to bring everything I had to that [episode] and give them a glimmer of what I can offer. There’s room for this to go someplace. I hope I’m going to be included.”

At least he doesn’t say that a spinoff definitely isn’t happening; we’ll take what we can get.

If Disney does want to explore the further adventures of Boba Fett, I couldn’t see anyone else playing him. And Disney did good to call Morrison rather than get someone new in the role. “My agent and I had a number of discussions — when are they going to call me? But then I kept forgetting about it,” the actor said. “In this day and age, they have a number of options. They could have called other people to play the part. They can go with a fresh face. They could have called the Rock. I felt so grateful that after all this time, something came to be.”

I think we can all be thankful that they didn’t choose the Rock.

A Boba Fett spinoff would answer a lot of unsolved mysteries. For example, how did Boba Fett escape the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi? Morrison, who’s not as immersed in the intricacies of the story as Star Wars superfans, isn’t the person to ask. “There’s quite a bit of loose ends, and I’m not one of those guys that knows too much about the actual history,” he said. “The fans of Star Wars, they have better knowledge of, ‘What’s happened? How can he still be alive? I thought he was stuck in this place?’ I can find out more on the internet.”

And we know just the place to start:
