The Snyder Cut to get an R-rated theatrical release?

Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is the edgiest cut. “There’s one scene where Batman drops an F-bomb.” Cool…..?

The internet got its wish earlier this year when WarnerMedia announced that it was letting Zack Snyder have another crack at Justice League, the 2017 movie he had to leave in the middle of filming due to a family emergency. Now, we’re getting a better idea of just what the Snyder Cut will look like.

For one thing, it’ll be long: Snyder is splicing in hours of unused footage and even shooting some new stuff, with the final product to be released on HBO Max in four one-hour segments early in 2021. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Snyder reveals that it’s gonna be hella edgy too, although anyone familiar with his work could probably have guessed that.

“Here’s one piece of information nobody knows: The movie is insane and so epic and is probably rated R — that’s one thing I think will happen, that it will be an R-rated version, for sure,” Snyder said. “We haven’t heard from the MPAA, but that’s my gut.”

"There’s one scene where Batman drops an F-bomb. Cyborg is not too happy with what’s going on with his life before he meets the Justice League, and he tends to speak his mind. And Steppenwolf is pretty much just hacking people in half. So [the rating would be due to] violence and profanity, probably both."

If you’re familiar with Batman comics or internet memes or both, this might put you in the mind of Frank Miller’s infamous run on All Star Batman, where Batman got all edgy right up in Robin’s face:

Edgy! Gritty! Trying so hard it becomes funny! BATMAN!

We’ll know how the Snyder Cut turns out soon enough. What’s far more surprising than a Zack Snyder movie being eDgY is the idea that it might get released theatrically, at least is Snyder has his way. “I’m a huge fan and a big supporter of the cinematic experience, and we’re already talking about Justice League playing theatrically at the same time it’s coming to HBO Max,” he said. “So weirdly, it’s the reverse [of the trend].”

Not long ago, Warner Bros. announced that it was releasing every film it had scheduled for release in 2021 films on HBO Max at the same time as it dropped in theaters, which made a lot of the filmmakers behind those movies very very mad. The Snyder Cut was originally supposed to come out on HBO Max alone, so releasing it in theaters would indeed be “the reverse” of the decision.

As for how he feels about the new plan, Snyder seems a little more chill than others. “It felt like a pretty bold move and that maybe the implication wasn’t 100 percent thought out,” he said. “I feel like there’s a lot of people panicking during COVID. I hope that, in the end, that’s what this was — some sort of knee-jerk to COVID and not some sort of greater move to disrupt the theatrical experience. I thought we were kind of already getting very close to the ideal theatrical window where you still had marketing material out there and you hadn’t forgotten about the film by the time it came out on DVD or streaming. I thought we were starting to hone in on that sweet spot, but this kind of throws a monkey wrench in the works.”

The first movie to release under this plan is Wonder Woman 1984, which comes out on HBO Max and in theaters on Christmas day.
