Netflix pulls back the curtain on its adaptation of Shadow and Bone, complete with a line of dialogue from the Darkling (Ben Barnes).

Netflix is adapting Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone, a fantasy series set in the Russia-inspired world of Ravka. We’ve been excited about the show for a while and even talked about it with Ben Barnes, who plays the villain the Darkling. And now, we hear him speak in character for the first time in a new teaser for the show:

The teaser also reveals the release date: Shadow and Bone is coming to Netflix in April of next year! (Exact date forthcoming.)

Shadow and Bone takes place in the Grishaverse, so named for the Grisha, people with the ability to manipulate the elements. The Darkling leads the Grisha in their struggle against the enemies of Ravka. Out hero is Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a teenage girl who discovers she has the Grisha ability to control light.

The show will actually combine two different series by Bardugo, both set in the Grishaverse: there’s the Shadow and Bone trilogy to start, and then the Six of Crows duology, which is set a few years later in a different location.

The countdown begins.
