Luke’s hallway scene
Just when we think all hope is lost for Mando and the gang as a platoon of Dark Troopers try to knock down the doors to the bridge, a lone X-wing flies boards Gideon’s cruiser. A Jedi in a black cloak with a green lightsaber cuts down the Dark Troopers like they are nothing. So much for Gideon’s research.
Of course, this Jedi is revealed to be none other than Luke Skywalker, played by a Max Lloyd-Jones with Mark Hamill’s face digitally slapped over his own; Grogu could feel his immense strength coming before he even docked. But before Luke can get to Grogu, several Dark troopers stand in Luke’s way. The tension is palpable as the elevator Luke takes to get to the bridge slowly ascends. When the elevator doors finally open, the Jedi master destroys ever trooper with ease.
At this moment, we are reminded of a similar scene from the end of Rogue One: the infamous Vader hallway scene. I really love the callback and the dichotomy of these two scenes. In Rogue One, Vader comes off as an unstoppable and intimidating force. The tone is very dark as he slaughters poor, screaming Rebel soldiers. Here, Luke is heroic as he saves Mando and company.
Still, Luke and his father have some similarities. Luke uses a Force power similar to Vader’s Force choke to destroy the last Dark Trooper. We aren’t sure if this is intentional, but it is a cool little reference to Darth Vader’s preferred technique.
I couldn’t have been happier with this scene; it was one of the best Star Wars moments since…well, the Vader scene in Rogue One. And we got a small cameo from everyone’s favorite droid, R2-D2.
