The final episodes of Vikings are finally here. We talk to star Alex Høgh Andersen about how Ivar the Boneless’ journey came to an end.

The final 10 episodes of Vikings are officially available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, and the stars are talking about the final leg of this six-season saga! We sat down with Alex Høgh Andersen (Ivar the Boneless) to learn how he felt about his character’s ending.

Warning: SPOILERS follow below.

Okay, we’re gonna spoil the ending of the show now. Last chance.

In the series finale, aptly titled “The Last Act,” we see Ivar finally sent to Valhalla courtesy by a random young English soldier. This was a bit of a swerve, since it was teased throughout the series that Hvitserk would be the one to do in his brother. “I liked the way we did it, it was kind of my own idea that it was going to be a nobody that stabbed him,” Andersen told us. “It just felt authentic. Life is fragile; it’s not just Valhalla, the gods, destiny and yada yada. It can just be a random, young soldier on the battlefield that all of a sudden just stabs you. I liked that, the simplicity of more. It was great dying in Hvitserk’s arms, looking up at those heaven blue eyes [laughs]. I’m satisfied.”

"I loved it. Being honest, I loved it. I loved dying. It was an unspoken thing between [creator Michael Hirst] and I, we didn’t talk about it but we both kind of knew, that of course Ivar is gonna die. You would kind of not expect it, he was always the survivor. Ivar has gotten through so much stuff, that it’s weird he got so far. The show is gonna end, so of course I’m gonna go out with a bang. I love that. I love that I’m going out with a bang, and that it ended."

If he’s happy, we’re happy.

And Andersen makes a valid point: all too often in battle scenes, the hero and villain magically seem to find each other on a battlefield of thousands, so it was refreshing to see such an important character killed by some rando.

Hopefully it’s a trend we can see more of going forward. For now, we celebrate the end of Vikings, and Ivar, with a cup of ale. Skoal!
