Hyde Park Entertainment and Endeavor Content are teaming up for a movie, TV series AND game show about the Rubik’s cube, the iconic three-by-three puzzle.

Have you ever played with a Rubik’s Cube and thought it would make a really good movie? No? Well, production companies Hyde Park Entertainment and Endeavor Content didn’t ask you. They clearly see big-screen potential in the iconic ’80s toy you play with for three minutes before throwing it in a drawer unsolved, because they’re moving forward with a Rubik’s Cube movie!

Notoriously difficult to solve, the three-by-three puzzle was created by Hungarian professor Erno Rubik in 1974. It went on to become one of the most recognizable puzzles in the world, with over 450 million cubes sold worldwide to date. But there has never been an attempt at a movie, perhaps because movies have stories and actors and stuff and a Rubik’s Cube is a colored block.

The news was confirmed by Deadline. Since it’s still very early in development, we do’nt know exactly what the movie will be about. It could delve into the Rubik’s Cube’s cultural significance over the years, the toy is regularly seen as a symbol of the ’80s. Maybe it could explore the Rubik’s Cube World Championships, where “speedcubers” race to see he can solve the puzzle quickest, a competition that’s been running in Boston since 2018.

All we know so far is that the feature movie will explore the “wonderful and complex Rubik’s universe,” whatever that means. I think there are a few directions a movie could go. It could follow an anthropomorphic Rubik’s Cube and be a fun family film in the same vein as The Lego Movie, or it could explore the puzzle from a different direction similar to what Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit did with chess…OR it could a sci-fi epic where solving Rubik’s Cube is the only way to stop the invasion of a race of a block-shaped aliens. Get creative, Hollywood.

The Rubik’s Cube movie will be produced by the CEO of Hyde Park, Ashok Amritraj, alongside executive producers Priya Amritraj and Addison Mehr. And if a movie wasn’t enough, there’s already a TV series and a game show project in the works. While the TV series remains ambiguous, the game show will be executive produced by Amritraj and Andrew Glassman of Glassman Media.

“I’ve had a personal and nostalgic connection to the Rubik’s Cube from my early days in India,” Amritraj  said in a statement. “I am thrilled to partner with Endeavor Content and Rubik’s/Smiley and look forward to creating a wonderful and complex Rubik’s universe.”

Overall, it’s a strange choice. I’m confident in saying nobody asked for a Rubik’s Cube movie. Maybe it could become the next major cinematic universe, spawning several sequels and even spinoffs. We could be on the brink of a Rubik’s Cube boom. Who knows? I wouldn’t bank on it, although stranger things have happened. No, I will not name them.
