In the first official clip from WandaVision, *something” wakes Wanda and Vision from their idealized 1960s slumber. This show looks so weird and I love it.

WandaVision is the first of many Marvel TV series coming to Disney+, and the studio is putting its weirdest foot forward. This. Show. Looks. So. Weird. It revolves around Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olson), who is living out a variety of scenarios inspired by classic American sitcoms, from I Love Lucy all the way through The Office, alongside her “husband” Vision. I put that word in quotes because Vision super-duper died in Avengers: Infinity Way, but…somehow he’s back?

My best guess is that Wanda is using her reality-warping powers to create some kind of bubble where she’s living out her ideal life with her dead boyfriend, even as the real world tries to intrude. But honestly, I could be very wrong. I’m definitely intrigued, whatever’s going on.

And the show just looks like a lot of fun, too. We’ve heard that some of the nine episodes were filmed in front of a live studio audience, meaning they’re probably just straight-up sitcom episodes. Olson showed off a clip during a visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live, below:

The separate beds! The laugh track! The aspect ratio! They’re really going all out to evoke a certain era in American TV. But notice that not everything is as peachy keen as Wanda would have it. What work her up, anyway? Is that a gunshot outside? That’s not something you’d expect to find in an idealized sitcom world.

“There’s a reason for it,” Olsen told Kimmel about the sitcom angle. “It’s not just a fun trick we do. We tried to film each episode as authentically as we could to each decade. And then in the ’50s, we filmed in front of a live studio audience filled with so many NDAs. It was really strange and fun and we had practical special effects on strings. The whole thing was so silly and so much fun.”

Olsen said that the clip is from “our ’60s Bewitched episode.” I’m betting it’s one of the two episodes that will drop on the premiere date. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if both of those episodes are straight-up sitcom homages of about 30 minutes apiece, for a one-hour premiere event.

The first two episodes of WandaVision drop on Disney+ on January 15, next Friday.
