Meet the Frasers

Whether you’re a book or series fan, you’ve likely made a place in your heart for Jamie Fraser, the most understanding, kindest, and most open-minded man living in the 18th century. But before Jamie, there were the people who brought him into the world: Ellen and Brian Fraser.

While the TV show has very briefly touched on Ellen and Brian’s lives, Gabaldon’s books go into more depth, detailing their love story and the difficulties they had to endure to come together and stay together. But even with all of that, we don’t know enough about Jamie’s parents, and we’d like to.

Luckily for Outlander fans everywhere, Gabaldon confirmed that she is currently working on a prequel novel about Jamie’s parents. Were they as passionately and in love as Claire and Jamie are? I’m going to guess yes, especially since they eloped before Ellen’s brothers could forcefully marry her off to another man.

In addition to filling in those gaps, the novel could give Starz a base for a spinoff about Brian and Ellen. They could bring back Andrew Whipp, who made a brief appearance as Brian Fraser in season 1, and they could potentially rope in Duncan Lacroix to play a young Murtagh.

Sam Heughan obviously couldn’t be in it since Jamie would be just a wee lad, but they could to find an adorable little Scottish redhead to play his younger self. I’d love to see what Jamie’s childhood was like; we know there were some difficult, tragic moments. And of course, there could plentiful appearances from fan favorite characters.

There’s a rich history here that fans are already invested in, and I think Starz would be remiss not to explore it further. Here’s hoping that Gabaldon’s book will pave a path for this spinoff to happen!
