Before going off to shoot The Boys season 3, Anthony Starr (Homelander) gave his take on the new episodes. “Oh, f-ck yeah. This is going to be great.”
The Boys was definitely one of the breakout hits of 2020. Yes, the gleefully pessimistic superhero satire already had one season under its belt, but the second season was when lots and lots of people started paying attention. And now that it’s ended on a high, all eyes are on what the show will do for its third time out. We don’t have a release date yet, but actor Antony Starr — who plays the psychopathic Superman analog Homelander — filming begins very soon.
“We haven’t got a specific date yet, but in the not-too-distant future, within a month or so,” Starr told ComicBook.com. “I think, because of COVID and because we’re shooting in the winter which is going to be a little difficult, it limits us to interiors, initially. So it’s a very staggered intake of cast to the shooting schedule this season.”
The show does a lot of filming in Toronto, where we’ve already seen star Jack Quaid (Hughie) traveling to begin his mandatory two-week quarantine. “I’ll head up soon,” Starr said. “Honestly, I’m chomping at the bit to get back into it, but there’s just a lot of new regulations. It’s a whole new world with COVID that we have to adhere to a bunch of new regulations, so very soon. Can’t be soon enough.”
So that takes care of the when. As for the what, Starr didn’t give away any specifics, but it sounds like the next leg of the journey will live up to what fans expect. “I think I’ve read the first four or five of season 3,” Starr said. “It’s a lot of fun, I got to say it. It’s a hell of a lot of fun. It’s strange because we care so much about what we’re doing and what we’re going to be doing with these episodes and we have very little control over it initially, especially.”
"So it’s always the mystery to see what the writers have come up with and what we’ll be up to. It’s great to get these scripts, and just read them, and start getting excited, and it generates ideas on our side. Like I said, I feel very fortunate because thus far I just get the scripts, and read them, and go, ‘Oh, f-ck yeah. This is going to be great.’"
I feel like if you read scripts for The Boys and don’t go “f-ck yeah,” something’s off. It’s that kind of show when it’s working well.
If all goes well, we could be watching new episodes of The Boys later this year?
