John Wick writer Derek Kolstad has been tasked with developing the pitch and concept for a Dungeons & Dragons television series.
The efforts to bring Dungeons & Dragons to life as a television series ramp up, now that talented John Wick writer Derek Kolstad has been tasked with developing a pitch for what such a show could look like, according to Variety.
Kolstad’s writing credits are solid, with John Wick being the cherry on top of the sundae. In addition to his work on all three John Wick films and other projects, he’s also working in the writer’s room for upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
And now, this action writer is diving into the high fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons. There’s buzz aplenty for this idea because D&D has never really gotten off the ground as a movie or TV franchise despite legions of loyal fans around the globe. The addition of John Wick’s writer into the fantasy-heavy, Game of Thrones-esque landscape could be the winning combination Hollywood has been hoping for.
In addition to the TV show, Chris Pine is still attached to star in a Dungeons & Dragons movie, so it looks like we could have a bit of a D&D onscreen renaissance on our hands. With a vast landscape and endless supplies of characters and stories, it’s hard to understand why D&D never took off on the big or small screen, but there’s every reason to hope that Kolstad will find a way to merge the game’s rich mythology with a story that’s right for television.
It’s early enough that there is no cast attached to the project yet, but stay tuned. If this ball gets rolling, there’s every reason to believe it will roll very quickly into a fast-tracked production.
