From new episodes of The Walking Dead season 10 to more spinoffs to the final season of the show, there’s a lot of zombies coming our way this year.

The end is in sight for The Walking Dead, with AMC’s zombie show officially confirmed to end with the upcoming eleventh season. Once that happens, fans will still have a number of spinoffs to carry the story forward. 2021 will mark both an end and a beginning.

In a recent promotional video, AMC teased what’s to come this year in the ever-expanding Walking Dead universe, complete with release dates. Check it out:

Let’s break down what we learned:

  • The six new episodes of The Walking Dead season 10 will drop as expected on February 28, along with new episodes of the popular talk show Talking Dead hosted by Chris Hardwick.
  • The second half of Fear the Walking Dead season 6 has no specific release date, but will return for its midseason premiere in the Spring.
  • Later on in the year, we’re getting the second and final season of spinoff The Walking Dead: World Beyond as well as Fear the Walking Dead season 7 and, of course,  the final season of The Walking Dead. That’s a lot of zombies. Across all shows, it all adds up to around 40 episodes!

Despite the gigantic slate of Walking Dead content we’re getting this year, fans were still quick to point out the absence of fan-favorite Rick Grimes from the promotional video. When Rick (Andrew Lincoln) left the show in season 9 episode “What Comes After,” AMC announced the character would make a triumphant return in a planned series of movies. But with no mention of them here, it doesn’t look like we’ll see them this year.

The prospect of Rick returning gained some traction when occasional Walking Dead director Rosemary Rodriguez teased his 2021 arrival in a tweet:

Sadly, it appears as if her prediction was inaccurate. It’s much more likely we’ll see the Rick movies happen in 2022.

And there are more Walking Dead projects on the way. So far AMC has announced a road-show style spinoff featuring Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus), as well as an anthology series titled Tales of The Walking Dead. As strange as it might sound, there are even rumors that a comedy series is in the works.

The Walking Dead‘s big 2021 begins with the six new season 10 episodes. In these episodes, we can expect to learn more about Maggie and what she’s been up to now that she’s back. And we’re finally getting an origin story for Negan where his real-life wife Hilarie Burton will play his wife Lucille. Clearly, there’s a lot to get excited about.
