Avengers: Endgame was going to have a post-credits scene that set up WandaVision

Marvel movies are famous for having post-credits scenes that tease what’s coming next. Avengers: Endgame was the exception…but it wasn’t going to be.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for using post-credits sequences to tease what’s coming next. They’ve become so popular that fans basically expect them included with every movie. However, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame didn’t feature anything after the credits, probably because the movie was the conclusion of the “Infinity Saga” and Marvel Studios wanted to seem like a real conclusion.

But that doesn’t mean they didn’t think of any post-credit scene contenders, including one that would have set up WandaVision, the new MCU TV show currently airing on Disney+. That show follows Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Paul Bettany (Vision) married and living together in suburbia, which is weird, because we saw them together was during the final battle in Wakanda in Avengers: Infinity War, when Thanos killed Vision.

How is that possible? To learn that we’ll have to watch the show. In the meantime, Bettany revealed info about that lost post-credits scene while talking with Olsen for IMDb. “At one point I was going to be in a tag, where you opened a sort of body bag drawer and there was the Vision,” he said. Unfortunately, that didn’t come to be. “ kind of talked to me and said, ‘I’ve got to pull the shots.’”

The jury is out on why exactly Feige decided to cut this sequence. Maybe he just wanted to preserve the integrity of Avengers: Endgame as a final chapter in a story, one that didn’t give itself away by immediately previewing what came next. Or maybe he didn’t want to tease WandaVision so we would have to jump right into the deep end when that show started. After all, not knowing what’s going on there is part of the fun.

Anyway, Bettany naturally assumed that his character being dead meant that he was out of the franchise, but comic characters are notoriously hard to keep down. “I went in and I didn’t want anybody to feel uncomfortable, so I said, ‘Look it’s been a great run and I love you guys and no hard feelings,’ and they went, ‘Wait are you quitting?’ and I went, ‘No, aren’t you firing me?’ and they went, ‘No,’ and I went, ‘Oh yeah, I’m in.’”

The first two episodes of WandaVision are currently available for streaming on Disney+, with additional episodes arriving on the platform every Friday.
