There’s been a lot of hype lately about new Game of Thrones shows in development over at HBO, including one based on Tales of Dunk and Egg and another that will give us the story of Robert’s Rebellion. But long before we see those, HBO is going to give us House of the Dragon, a story about a Targaryen civil war that tore Westeros apart over 100 years before the main series began.
We already know who’s playing some of the main characters in this conflict, but a show this big requires people behind the camera who are as talented as the ones in front of it, and it sounds like showrunner Ryan Condal is determined to make that happen. Speaking recently on The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of — a podcast where he and Hollywood veteran David Mandel talk about movie props — Condal let slip that he’d hired both a production and costume designer for the show. (Props to Westeros.org for keeping an eye on the podcast and noticing this.)
For its Game of Thrones prequel, HBO hires designers who have worked on the Harry Potter movies, Children of Men and much more.
On the production side, we have Jim Clay, an experienced professional who served as production designer on movies like The Crying Game, Love Actually, Children of Men and Murder on the Orient Express. Clay has worked on everything from romantic comedies to serious dramas to large-scale productions, which should help him balance the many tones a show like House of the Dragon will bring to the table. His work on Children of Men, which is constructed out a series of unbroken shots, in particularly impressive.
Meanwhile, Jany Temime will serve as costume designer. Her credentials may be even more impressive: she’s designed the costumes for movies like In Bruges, Skyfall, Gravity, Judy and Marvel’s upcoming Black Widow. And oh yeah, she was the costume designer for every Harry Potter film from Prisoner of Azkaban on.
And she also worked on Children of Men. I get the idea that Condal really likes Children of Men, and I don’t blame him.
On Game of Thrones, the production designer was Deborah Riley and the costume designer was Michele Clapton. They both did tremendous work, so Clay and Temime have a lot to live up to. It looks like they have what it takes, though.
House of the Dragon begins filming soon. It’s coming out in 2022The first season will air in 2022.
