Game of Thrones was famous for its battle scenes, but The Wheel of Time has some stuff that could raise the bar even higher.
Amazon Prime Video is determined to win the streaming wars, and it’s going to do it by giving viewers big heaping helpings of fantasy. Carnival Row, about a world where humans and fairy creatures struggle to live side by side, is already up and running. We’re also getting a Lord of the Rings show and an adaptation of Robert Jordan’s 14-book strong The Wheel of Time series, which provides the studio with 11,308 pages of source material. And those pages are filled with fantastical places, hundreds of characters and other stuff that’s going to break to bank; thank goodness Amazon has famously deep pockets. We already know they’ve used them to hire talented actors, experienced VFX teams, and sword-masters, as well as build massive sets and get the goodest wolves.
As with a lot of big fantasy series, some of the most memorable parts of The Wheel of Time are the big battle sequences. On the battlefield, our heroes face terrible odds, agonizing defeat and triumphant victory. There are shocking twists and spectacular set pieces can’t wait to see rendered onscreen. Let’s take a look at some of the battle scenes we’re most looking forward to.
If you haven’t read the series completely, be warned: This article contains heavy SPOILERS from all 14 books…
Dumai’s Wells
The last chapter in Lord of Chaos spotlights a devastatingly bloody skirmish involving Aiel, Two Rivers men, Asha’man, Aes Sedai and the Dragon Reborn. The shocking carnage mainly comes at the hands of Asha’man channelers, who demonstrate their destructive power to the world — and to readers — for the first time. The climactic ending to the book also underlines the growing madness within Rand al’Thor and teases a darker story to follow.
The ta’veren twisting of chance leads to circumstances that balloon out of control. Aes Sedai loyal to Elaida are carrying an imprisoned Rand when they come under attack by Shaido Aiel. The situation only escalates when Rand’s forces, led by Perrin Aybara with the Salidar Aes Sedai, arrive to rescue him. The growing frustration and anxiety of the preceding chapters, which involve Rand trapped in a box with the voice of Lews Therin in his head, exploded in a fury at the Battle of Dumai’s Wells.
Mazrim Taim and the Black Tower Asha’men use gateways to travel to aid in the fighting, strongly pushing their advantage. Instead of retreating, Rand decides to teach the Shaido a lesson, allowing the Asha’men to kill them, littering the battlefield with the dead. The chapter ends as the Aes Sedai kneel and swear fealty to the Dragon Reborn. It’s an epic, terrifying conclusion.
