Cleansing the Taint

Winter’s Heart is a little dull overall, but the ending certainly gets the heart racing as we have a battle fought only with the One Power. The chapter, “With the Choedan Kal,” moves quickly, with the points of view flipping back and forth between combatants on different sides of the conflict. It creates a lot of tension and leaves readers wondering if the heroes can hold on long enough as Nyneave al’Meara and Rand al’Thor attempt to cleanse saidin.

Rand and Nyneave take control of the two most powerful magical artifacts ever made and travel to Shadar Logoth. There, they link together, summoning immense levels of the One Power from the sa’angreals to purify saidin from the taint. As these two are occupied, a band of talented channelers must defend their position at any cost from attacking Forsaken out for blood.

The sequences spends a lot of time focusing on minor characters, but we also get to enjoy Nyneave and Rand’s opposing perspectives as they deal with saidin and saidar. One by one, Forsaken appear, and all are repelled by men and women channeling the One Power together. At the end of it, the cleansing of the taint is a world-altering event felt throughout the entire world of The Wheel of Time.

Perrin and the Whitecloaks

Perrin’s final encounter with the Galad Damodred’s Whitecloaks, an independent military force known as the Children of the Light, stands as one of the better battle sequences from book series. Although others are more exciting, this confrontation is incredibly suspenseful, and capitalizes on Perrin’s troubled history with the organization. After Perrin is driven to darkness by the death of his wolf-guide, readers go in expecting the worse.

After Perrin is deemed guilty of illegally killing Whitecloaks in the past, Berelain worries to Faile that Perrin may attack their camp to escape judgement. Perrin goes so far as to find the perfect spot to ambush the Whitecloak’s camp. Yet as his army approaches the encampment, and the Whitecloaks and readers alike believe an attack imminent, a horde of Trollocs and Myddraal appear, and Perrin orders his army to attack them in a stunning twist. He knew what would happen the whole time.

After it’s all over and peace brokered between Galad and Perrin, readers breathe a sigh of relief. Perrin attacking Whitecloaks to escape judgement would have been out of character. It’s also cool to see Perrin wield Mah’alleinir, a giant and newly-forged hammer, for the first time.
