The Battle of Tar Valon

The raid on the White Tower by the Seanchan leads to the climax of Ewgene al’Vere’s character arc during the schism in the White Tower. The seeds of the Aes Sedai divide are planted early in the series, and it reaches full bloom during this attack. The Battle of Tar Valon serves as a catalyst for healing, and cements Egwene as the undeniable Amyrlin Seat, in soul and in title.

Prophetic dreams had always warned Egwene that the Seanchan would attack the Tower. After being captured and declared a novice once more, she refuses, and asserts herself as the true Amyrlin still. Word of her defiance spreads among the Aes Sedai. Egwene works to maintain control of the Tower, but the sudden Seanchan attack ruins all of her plans.

Facing off against a force of flying to’raken and many damane, Egwene rallies the novices loyal to her, whom she’s taught to travel. They gather sa’angreal, and Egwene’s counterattack is a thing of beauty. Looking inspirational and almost mythical from afar, she channels enormous amounts of the One Power to rid the White Tower of Seanchan, witnessed by all the Aes Sedai there that day.

The Last Battle

This final fight lasts 200 pages, and every piece of it is engaging and memorable, if exhausting to read. It seemed like Brandon Sanderson’s goal was for the reader to feel as tired as the characters themselves. It’s a hard chapter to put the book down in the middle of.

At long last, Tarmon Gai’don has come: the Forces of the Light fight the Forces of the Dark, as it so often is in fantasy. When building an endgame up for so long, it’s hard to provide a satisfying finish. It has to be big, emotional and involve every character in a meaningful way. The Last Battle checks those boxes and more, leading the heroes readers have followed since the beginning to the finish line.

It’s truly a masterpiece of writing, and it could be argued that Amazon’s Wheel of Time series should spend an entire season on it.
