Kevin Fiege shoots down idea of Marvel-Star Wars crossover

At some point or another, every geek has imagined what it would be like seeing Tony Stark meet Luke Skywalker or watching the Avengers face off against the Galactic Empire. Who would win? Now, since Marvel and Star Wars are under the control and direction of Disney, there seems to be no better time to create that kind of mammoth crossover event.

But before we get our hopes up, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently played down talk of a crossover. If anyone can end all talk with a wave of his hand, it’s Feige.

Marvel and Star Wars have connections outside of Disney: Marvel Comics has been a long-time publisher of comic books set within the Star Wars universe, although there has been no comic crossover yet. Furthermore, Marvel is no stranger to crossing over with other popular science fiction franchises. In 1998, there was a comic crossover between the X-Men and Star Trek: The Next Generation. After some success, it was expanded in Michael Jan Friedman’s novel Planet X. That shows that these sorts of things can work.

Don’t count on a Marvel-Star Wars crossover anytime soon

“If you’d ask me if anything we’re talking about right now was in the realm of possibility 20 years ago, I would’ve said, ‘I don’t think so,’” Kevin Feige recently told Yahoo! Entertainment about a potential Marvel-Star Wars crossover. Sounds promising…

"But I really don’t think so. I don’t think there’s any reason for it."

Oh.

I mean, Feige is right to think there’s no point. The MCU and the Star Wars universe are expanding at a rate faster than ever before. The MCU has even started crossing over with other Marvel franchises made at different studios, as seen in the latest episode of WandaVision. Tons of new movies and TV shows are in development years before they’ll hit our screens. A crossover, however cool it might be, would be an unnecessary distraction from the paths these franchises are on.

On the other hand, the possibilities are endless with a crossover like this. For one thing, it would undoubtedly drive curious subscribers to Disney+. Personally, I think it would make a good one-shot animated movie. It could kind of take the tone of Marvel’s upcoming What If…? series, which will explore what would have happened in the MCU if events had gone differently. What if Tony Stark met Luke Skywalker while stranded in space? Sounds ridiculous, but it could be a lot of fun.

Kevin Feige is currently developing his own Star Wars movie with Loki showrunner Michael Waldron, whose writing the scripts. I’m willing to bet that no MCU characters will show up in this one. But who knows what the future holds?
