Stranger Things 4 is “the darkest season that’s ever been”

Netflix’s Stranger Things has gotten more and more intense with each year, and expectations for season 4 are now sky-high.

Stranger Things, Netflix’s hit show about a sleepy Indiana town beset by horrific interdimensional monsters, has grown year over year. When it started in 2016, it was a no-name series that got popular thanks purely to word of mouth, and by the time season 3 rolled around it was one of the brightest jewels in Netflix’s crown.

And when season 4 arrives, the show may just blow up the planet. The third season ended on a bunch of cliffhangers: will Eleven get her powers back? What exactly happened to Sheriff Hopper? Will the Byers and Wheeler clans reunite now that Joyce is moving the family out of town (which she should, by the way, too many eviscerations in Hawkins)? Speaking to CBC Listen, all star Finn Wolfhard could say was that things are gonna get grim.

“Every season it gets darker,” the actor said. “I will say [with] season three I was like, ‘This is the darkest season that there’ll ever be’ – exploding rats and everything. But really, season four so far… it’s the darkest season that’s ever been [made].

"Every year it gets amped-up; every year it gets funnier, darker and sadder – and everything. So I’m really excited for people to see it."

We’ve had little hints about what’s coming in season 4, but nothing definitive. For one thing, reports of Hopper’s death are apparently greatly exaggerated, although we have no idea how he survived the climax of season 3. The creators have also hinted that the new episodes could take the gang outside of Hawkins. The peril of the Upside Down is going global.

And hopefully we’ll be seeing where all of this goes sooner rather than later. “We’re still filming it,” Wolfhard said. “Cause of COVID we had to put it on hold, but now they’re back filming right now.” Cross your fingers for a 2021 release.
