Rian Johnson’s Star Wars movie trilogy is still happening
By Dan Selcke
The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was supposed to direct his own Star Wars movie trilogy, but we hadn’t heard anything in a while and assumed it was over.
Rian Johnson is the director behind 2017’s Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, which depending on who you ask is either the best and boldest Star Wars movie ever produced or a raging trash fire that spits on the franchise. However you feel about it, the movie made well north of $1 billion at the box office, so it wasn’t too surprising when Disney announced that Johnson would be heading up a new trilogy of Star Wars movies after the sequel trilogy was over.
We don’t know anything about that trilogy — when it’s set, what characters are involved, etc — but we’ve heard pretty much nothing about it for years. While Disney has announced new Star Wars movies from the likes of Taikia Waititi and Patty Jenkins (not to mention a Star Destroyer’s worth of Star Wars TV shows) it’s been all quiet on the Johnson front.
Many fans, including myself, assumed that the Johnson trilogy was being put out to pasture. Remember the fans who thought The Last Jedi was a raging trash fire? They were pretty vocal, and it seemed to scare Disney a bit; the studio announced that Star Wars movies were going on “hiatus” after the release of The Rise of Skywalker, which may have gotten even more blowback than The Last Jedi. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss left their own Star Wars trilogy for a Netflix deal and Johnson went and made the acclaimed Knives Out. It felt like Disney was rethinking its Star Wars strategy and that Johnson wasn’t a part of it.
But not so fast! Author Sariah Wilson recently interviewed the director, and got a new scoop.
She didn’t reveal exactly what Johnson said, but gave hope to everyone hoping to see more of his ideas for Star Wars:
"Yes, Rian’s SW trilogy is still on. No dates or timelines because he has other projects going on, but it is happening.THAT IS ALL I NOW ABOUT IT."
Yeah, that’s not gonna stop people from asking for more info.
Still, that’s interesting news. What do you all make of it? Do you want to see Rian Johnson return to the galaxy far, far away, or is he better off doing other things?
