These days it’s hard for big studios to pull off a good surprise in a show or movie given that there are people who make a living trying to discover spoilers. WandaVision star Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis) recently opened up about how Marvel manages to keep certain plot twists as complete surprises; I don’t think anyone saw that WandaVision cameo coming the other week, did they?

Speaking to DJ tWitch on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dennings said Marvel’s method involves outlining which topics actors can talk about in interviews. “You know, send us a thing of what we can’t say, instead of what we can say.”

It’s one thing for cast members to be present on a panel with a Marvel representative nearby to make sure nothing gets said out of turn, but when they’re out doing press on their own they need to know what they can and can’t say to avoid revealing something they shouldn’t. The list of no-go topics makes it crystal clear. Although that strategy doesn’t always work…

Marvel keeps some plot twists hidden even from its own actors

Dennings has talked about how the cast is kept in the dark about major plot points. She told Jimmy Kimmel that the crew went to great lengths to keep Quicksilver’s return a secret. “Obviously, that was a massive surprise,” she said. “I mean they kept it from me a little bit as well. I wasn’t sure what was going on.” She even said that actor Evan Peters was covered by a cloak to avoid being seen even by drones, helping to keep his time on set a secret.

Marvel has become known for pulling off incredible cameos in their movies, so it’s no wonder that they have some strategies to keep things under wraps.
