Now that WandaVision is over, Disney is keen we get excited for the next Marvel TV series they have on tap, and when it looks as good as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, that’s not hard to do.

Anthony Mackie, of course, plays the Falcon, aka Sam Wilson. The Direct obtained an advance copy of the Spring 2021 D23 Magazine featuring an interview with Mackie, who revealed that fans will learn more about Sam’s history in the upcoming Disney+ series:

"The Falcon is a regular guy who just happened to meet Captain America and volunteered as a fellow soldier to try and save the world. Sam is always Sam. The way it’s written and the way they’ve been playing it is he’s always going to be Sam. The great thing about the series is you get to learn his entire backstory, his life, who he is, and how he became Sam Wilson."

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is about the past, present and future

So while the show will dip into the past, it’ll also take inspiration from the present. “It’s no secret that in 2020, we learned a lot about ourselves as individuals and as a country,” Wilson told Entertainment Weekly. “Sam brings a lot of that to the table—a lot of those issues and questions as a Black man in America in 2020.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was originally going to be the first MCU series out of the gate, but the pandemic messed with schedules, and WandaVision ended up beating it to the starting line. Now that WandaVision has been a massive success, there’s a lot of pressure on TFATWS to deliver. Mackie and Sebastian Stan, who plays the Winter Soldier, are talented actors who will get more space to play in the six-episode show, as opposed to a few moments per movie on the big screen, so hopes are high.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier arrives on Disney+ on March 19.
