Extended Superman & Lois episodes are coming…after a surprise hiatus
By Dan Selcke
The news about Superman & Lois is running hot and cold. On the one hand, the superhero-themed family drama is a hit. We’re loving it, and it looks like a lot of viewers agree: according to Deadline, 3.25 million people tuned in for the first episode, a record for the network. And you know The CW didn’t renew the show for a second season after only one episode because the reception was bad.
The bad news is that the show is going on hiatus after it airs its fifth episode on March 23. What’s behind this unwelcome surprise? COVID-19, of course; the pandemic interrupted filming on the series, so it’s going to have to go away for awhile while the team touches up the rest of the first season. It’ll return with new episodes on May 18.
In between, The CW will air new episodes of Supergirl, which is about to launch its sixth and final season. Then, when Superman & Lois comes back, Supergirl will go on hiatus until later in the summer, when it comes back to finish out its run. It’s not the most elegant solution, but at least we’ll get lots of new Super-programming in the coming months.
Extended episodes of Superman & Lois are coming
Not only that, we’ll get extra Super-programming. SyFy Wire reports that The CW will run extended versions of each episode of The CW app and CWTV.com. The catch (there’s always a catch) is that they’ll only appear after the season finale airs, and will be available to watch for free until 30 days before season 2 premieres.
So it’s feast and famine for Superman & Lois fans right now, but at least the show has quickly gained some fans. Things were always gonna be weird when we got to this part of the year, long enough after COVID hit that things were interrupted but not so long that studios learned how to deal with it. We’ll make it through.
