Cinematographer compares working on Game of Thrones to Justice League
By Dan Selcke
Justice League cinematographer Fabian Wagner also lensed some of the most legendary action scenes from Game of Thrones. How do they compare?
Fabian Wagner was the cinematographer on some of the most visually explosive episodes of Game of Thrones, including “Hardhome,” “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Bells.” We’re talking about lensing action sequences that look and feel as good — or, if we’re being honest, better — than pretty much anything Hollywood has to offer.
Clearly, the man is good, so it’s no surprise that he has a lot of other offers. He also served as cinematographer on Justice League, which is now getting a second life on HBO Max in the form of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Cinema Blend got to talk with Wager about his work, and asked him using his Game of Thrones experience working on Justice League. “That’s a really good question,” he said. “A really hard one, too. I don’t think I could actually verbalize exactly what it is. I think it’s more of a sort of intuition and something that you’ve learned along the way, having done those other battle scenes.”
"Obviously Justice League is totally different. You can’t really compare it with Battle of the Bastards, but still, it is action. And to me, that was one of the things that drew me in the most was shooting action sequences. And this is a different one, with a visual master of action sequences like Zack. So, you know, it was just, I loved every minute. It was just great. Hopefully my experience in doing those other things, sort of gave that little extra touch."
We already knew Wagner was brilliant based on his Game of Thrones work, and based on the reception to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it looks like he hasn’t lost his touch.
You can watch both Game of Thrones and Zack Snyder’s Justice League now on HBO Max.
