J.J. Abrams and writer Ta-Nehisi Coates are working on a reboot of the Superman franchise, probably with a Black actor in the lead role.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is out now on HBO Max, and unless there’s an internet outcry so loud that Warner Bros. decides to make a direct sequel (it’s happened before), this is probably the last time we’ll see this particular version of the DCEU.

Although it’s not clear, that means this may be the last time we see Henry Cavill as Superman, a role he started playing back in 2013’s Man of Steel. Recently, it was revealed that super-producer and reboot enthusiast J.J. Abrams was working with author Ta-Nehisi Coates on a new Superman movie, probably one that will star a Black actor in the role.

And that sounds great to Deborah Snyder, who produced Zack Snyder’s Justice League alongside her husband. “I think it’s really interesting,” she told SyFy Wire. “I cannot wait to see what they’re cooking up. We are big fans of J.J.’s, so I always like to see what he’s doing.”

"I think that’s amazing. I think what’s great about the DCU is that there also are amazing Black characters, like Cyborg, and I think we need to be telling more of these stories. Representation is important, and always has been for us. So, I think it’s about time. Listen, I love Henry [Cavill], but I think there’s other stories to be told as well."

To be fair, we don’t know the whole story here yet. Maybe whoever they cast as Superman next will play him in this new version of the DCEU. Maybe it’ll be a side story that isn’t really part of the rest of the universe, kind of like Joker with Joaquin Phoenix. Or maybe they’re gonna do away with the idea of a shared universe entirely and just do standalone movies and series.

And it’s possible that Cavill could come back as Superman. But I’m with Deborah Snyder here: I’m curious to see something new.
