What We Do In The Shadows spin-off coming to The CW and HBO Max
By Dan Selcke
There’s no word on when we’ll see season 3 of What We Do In The Shadows, but spin-off Wellington Paranormal could help with the wait.
What We Do In The Shadows is definitely one of the best sitcoms to come out over the last few years. Based on the 2014 movie on the same name from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the FX series follows a group of vampires living on Staten Island, still stuck in their old world ways while modern life has long since passed them by. The first two seasons were side-splitting stuff. There’s a third on the way, but it’s taking longer than usual thanks to the coronavirus.
But there may be a way to make the wait more bearable. You see, the What We Do In The Shadows movie had another spin-off not nearly as many people know about: Wellington Paranormal, about a couple of police officers charged with investigating the strangely large number of supernatural occurrences reported in the New Zealand City. Like FX’s What We Do In The Shadows show, Wellington Paranormal was developed by Waititi and Clement. Already on its third season, the show is broadcast on New Zealand TV station TVNZ 2, but according to CBR, The CW and HBO Max are teaming up to bring it stateside.
Like its sister show, Wellington Paranormal is a mockumentary, in this case with a Cops feel to it. Here’s the official synopsis:
"WELLINGTON PARANORMAL follows the adventures of Officers O’Leary (Karen O’Leary, “What We Do In The Shadows”) and Minogue (Mike Minogue, “What We Do In The Shadows”), hard-working members of the Wellington constabulary’s paranormal unit who, under the supervision of Sergeant Maaka (Maaka Pohatu, “Savage”), investigate supernatural occurrences that arise in the capital of New Zealand on a surprisingly regular basis."
The current plan is for the episodes to run on The CW, and then be available on The CW’s ad-supported digital platforms (The CW app and CWTV.com) as well as HBO Max the next day. The only bad thing is that we have a date for when this will all start. But if Wellington Paranormal is half as funny as What We Do In The Shadows — the movie or the show — I would like to see it now, please.
Filming on What We Do In The Shadows season 3 officially started the other month. Hopefully that means we’ll see new episodes this year.
