11 Harry Potter spin-off series we want to see (or not)
6. Screen adaptation of Starkid’s A Very Potter Musical
If you’ve never heard of A Very Potter Musical, there is something you need to do for me right now: Gg watch it. The musical is a parodic stage adaptation of the Harry Potter books developed in 2009 by three college kids who called themselves Starkid. They went onto to create other viral musicals, including A Very Potter Sequel and A Very Potter Senior Year. Darren Criss, who wrote the music and lyrics, also starred as Harry, right before he became widely known for his role on Glee.
The first musical is loosely based on the events of the first, fourth and seventh books, mixing together various plot points like the Triwizard Tournament and the war against Voldemort. Highlights include the seven-minute long musical number “Going Back To Hogwarts,” the epic love ballad “Granger Danger” (a duet between Ron and Draco), and Draco’s obsession with Pigfarts, a Martian Wizarding School.
A Very Potter Musical is a transformative fan project, so the situation with the rights is nebulous, but who’s to say that Warner Bros. couldn’t work with Starkid and mount this as a television movie? We need more musicals, and we certainly need Harry Potter parodies.
