16. Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo

What happened to the duo: These two came to a sad ending. Their marriage was arranged, but they formed an honest bond out on the Dothraki Sea, and Dany grew pregnant with their child. However, Drogo took a wound in a fight and it got infected. He was dying. Desperate to get her love back, Daenerys allowed a witch to work her magic on Drogo, only to end up putting Drogo into a coma and killing her unborn baby. Dany burned her lover’s body on a pyre, leading to the birth of her dragons, one of which she named after him.

Why they were so great: The relationship definitely didn’t start well. Drogo had his culture and Dany had hers. What started out as a non-consensual relationship developed into one of trust, understanding, and eventually love.

That’s what makes them stand out. Dany grew up believing that she was just a pawn in a game she didn’t understand. However, she gained confidence as Drogo’s Khaleesi, and ended up taking over his khalasar when he died.

There are valid questions about whether this type of relationship should be admired or not, but there is one thing to say about it: Without the relationship, Dany wouldn’t have become the leader she was.
