11. Tyrion Lannister and Varys

What happened to the duo: Varys realized that Dany was not the queen he imagined her to be. She was making rash decisions and showing signs of being just like her father. Just as Varys started sending out birds to try and undermine her, Dany had him executed.

It gets worse. It was Tyrion who informed Dany of Varys’ treachery, and this after they’d been friends for several season.

Why they were so great: It was hard to believe at first that Varys and Tyrion would ever get along. They seemed to want different things, and Tyrion was a Lannister, which didn’t help matters.

It was when Tyrion was facing execution in King’s Landing that Varys took a risk and helped him escape the city. He smuggled Tyrion out and the two headed across the Narrow Seas.

Tyrion and Varys are both smart and knew how to play the game of thrones, which they bonded over even if they were wary of each other at first. That bond, as we sadly later learned, could be broken.

In the end, Tyrion managed to achieve Varys’ dream: peace in King’s Landing, at least for the time being.
