7. Bran Stark and Hodor

What happened to the duo: Right before Hodor died, we finally found out why he could only say one word, and what it meant. Bran had warged into Hodor in the past while White Walkers attacked in the present. Hodor and Meera got Bran out, but the White Walkers were too fast. In the present, Meera told Hodor to “hold the door.” That reverberated back into the past, and a young Hodor started yelling it out until it slurred together and became “Hodor.”

His name was his whole purpose of being alive. This was a gut-wrenching end to this relationship.

Why they were so great: Hodor was friendly and loyal. After Bran was paralyzed, Hodor was became his legs, carrying him everywhere without ever getting angry or irritated.

In turn, Bran trusted Hodor. This man was more than just someone to help him get around. Hodor became a friend.

Had Bran known what would happen to Hodor, maybe he would have done things differently. He never meant to hurt Hodor or turn him into the man that he would become. Their relationship was bittersweet.
