23. Davos and Shireen Baratheon

What happened to the duo: After seasons of watching this friendship, Shireen Baratheon was burned alive on the orders of her own father, Stannis Baratheon. Davos was away at the time. It was absolutely devastating.

Davos was distraught when he learned the truth, especially when he knew why the decision was made. Stannis was dead by this time, but if he wasn’t this might have broken their bond.

Why they were so great: Shireen Baratheon was a child hidden away from the world. She suffered from greyscale as an infant, which fortunately didn’t kill her, but it did leave her permanently scarred. She was resented by her mother, who hated that she had only given Stannis a sickly daughter.

Davos didn’t care about any of that. He saw the mind of this young woman. They bonded when Shireen taught him to read. There was never any judgment between the two of them. It was one of the purest friendships of the series.

Through Shireen, Davos learned a lot about himself. Shireen was like a daughter to him, and it’s no wonder he was broken when Stannis followed Melisandre’s suggestion to make her a sacrifice to the Lord of Light. It was even worse that Davos wasn’t there to save Shireen and had to discovery the truth himself.
