18. Arya Stark and Jaqen H’ghar

What happened to the duo: When Arya got everything she needed from the Faceless Men, she walked away from Braavos and headed back to Winterfell. Before she did that, she made sure Jaqen knew what was happening.

Arya delivered the Waif’s face to him and held Needle at Jaqen, ready to fight. However, she decided not to kill him in the end and reclaimed her name. Jaqen simply allowed her to leave, claiming she was “no one” and making it clear she had completed her training.

Why they were so great: Jaqen started off as a man who helped Arya in a time of need. After she saved his life (along with two other prisoners) from a fire, he told her that he would give her three names, meaning she could name three people and he would kill them.

Arya didn’t kill the people we thought she would, even choosing Jaqen himself at one point to get him to help her and her friends escape the castle of Harrenhal. After leaving, Jaqen gave her a coin, and told her she could use it to get to Braavos. And that was it. We weren’t even sure we’d ever see him again.

We did, though. In Game of Thrones season 5, Arya headed across the waters to Braavos to train as a fighter. She needed to cross out the names on her list. It wasn’t the partnership we necessarily wanted, but it was one that was needed for the future of the series. And in the end, these two parted with mutual respect.
