The Umbrella Academy season 3 has “a long way to go, but it’s good”

The second season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy ended on quite the cliffhanger, as viewers were glancingly introduced to the Sparrow Academy. That makes the wait for season 3 particularly agonizing, and it’s probably going to be longer than usual what with the pandemic slowing down filming on movies and TV shows around the world.

While filming on the off-beat superhero has started up again, it looks like fans still have a long wait ahead of them. Star Tom Hopper (Luther Hargreeves, aka Number One) told Collider that they’re just getting started:

"Well, the COVID protocols mean that we have shorter days, which means that the actual length of the shoot is going to be a lot longer. But yeah, we’re really near the beginning. We’re not that far into it at the moment, so we’ve got a long way to go, but it’s good. The great thing is the material, the work is amazing, so every day on set is, like I say, a joy and so much fun."

The Umbrella Academy isn’t the only series suffering through production delays due to the pandemic. Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo expressed similar sentiments about filming for the show’s fourth season, while The Witcher just wrapped an unusually long production cycle for season 2.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 will be worth the wait

Fortunately, Hopper’s thoughts on the new scripts suggest the upcoming season will be worth the wait. Although season 3 hasn’t been written in its entirety, the actor seems satisfied with what the cast has been given so far:

"The scripts are so great, season three, it’s really such a joy to be doing it. I feel very privileged to be a part of this show. And I think the best thing really is that we’re all so comfortable with each other now. So it feels like we can really hit the ground running from a creative standpoint and we’ve got the same crew, most of the same crew."

And on a brighter note, the slowed production schedule for The Umbrella Academy has given the actor time to shoot Sony’s Resident Evil. Speaking with Digital Spy, Hopper sounded equally pleased with his role as the villain Wesker. “I think fans of the game will be happy, but at the same time, I think they should recognize that we want to make these characters as real and as grounded as possible,” he said. “I feel like the Wesker in the game obviously has that Smith from The Matrix-type idea.”

It seems Hopper is keeping plenty busy, but when exactly fans might see him return to the small screen as Luther Hargreeves remains a mystery. There’s no word on when the third season of The Umbrella Academy will arrive, but it sounds like it might be a while.
