Harry Potter may have ended nearly a decade ago, but its legacy continues to live on through the cast that brought its characters to life. We’ve seen many of them go on to do amazing things: Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) as Belle in the live-action Beauty and the Beast, Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) starring in Apple+’s Servant, and even Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) doing his fair share of television shows and movies over the last few years.

During an interview with Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Lewis recalled his time on the Harry Potter set, including a very sweet moment he shared with his late co-star Alan Rickman (Severus Snape).

Mathew Lewis was intimated to talk to the man who played Snape in Harry Potter

Despite having worked with him for nearly a decade, Lewis didn’t really approach Rickman at any point simply because he was too shy. I mean this is freaking Die Hard’s Hans Gruber we’re talking about, so who wouldn’t be nervous about talking to him?

But during his last day on the Harry Potter set, Lewis finally worked up the courage to talk to Rickman, and what he experienced was well worth the wait. “On [Rickman’s] last day, I went to his trailer,” Lewis remembered. “And I just said to him, ‘Hey, I know it’s your last day, and I just wanted to say this has been incredible, to have worked with you for this long. I know that we’ve not really spoken very much, but I just wanted to say it was because I terrified but you were incredible. I just want to say thank you for allowing me to work with you for 10 years and not ever shout at me or treating any of us as anything less than your equal. And he was like, ‘Come on in.’ And he put the kettle on, and we had a cup of tea and we chatted about what I was going to do in my career moving forward and what he recommended I do.”

"I’m so glad I did that. I wish I’d done it five years earlier, you know what I mean? But at least I can say I did that. I never did that with anyone else."

Better late than never! After all, getting career advice from Alan Rickman is nothing short of amazing, and it’s something Lewis values to this day.
