The Iron Throne joins London’s Scenes in the Square statue trail

In Leicester Square, in the West End of London, there is a trail of statues celebrating the last 100 years in film. Visitors can get their picture taken with Harry Potter, sit down next to Mr. Bean or Paddington Bear, pose beside Batman and Wonder Woman, and more.

There are nine statues in all. And now, the city is adding in a tenth: the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones, which will be the first statue inspired by a TV show. It will be unveiled this summer.

“The trail is a true celebration of entertainment, paying tribute to film, theatre and now television,” said Mark Williams, director of destination marketing for Heart of London. “We’re excited to be able to honour the legacy of one of the world’s most popular TV shows of all time as part of our Scenes in the Square trail. Thanks to Westminster City Council for their continued support; we’re looking forward to welcoming people back into the Heart of London this Summer and encourage fans to come down and see the Iron Throne in all its glory, alongside the additional statues in the square.”

Polly Cochrane, WarnerMedia Country Manager for UK and Ireland, also weighed in: “We are delighted that The Iron Throne will be joining the most iconic characters and actors in entertainment as part of the Scenes in the Square Leicester Square trail. Game of Thrones has been enthralling fans for 10 years and we are excited to continue to share its legacy with everyone as we look forward to the next chapter in the franchise.”

What is “the next chapter in the Game of Thrones franchise”?

As we speak, HBO is working on House of the Dragon, a new TV show set over 100 years before the original. Installing the Iron Throne in Leicester Square is a nice way to honor the legacy of the show, which positively impacted the economy of the UK and Northern Ireland in particular. But it’s also a way to remind people that more is coming, potentially a lot more, if everything works out the way WarnerMedia wants it to.

And on top of that, it’s also a lot of fun! When travel opens up again, this could be a great destination for Game of Thrones fans the world over.
