For those who have been patiently waiting for the next book in The Kingkiller Chronicle series by Patrick Rothfuss to be released, we feel your pain. As we all know too well by now, the last entry, The Wise Man’s Fear, hit bookshelves back in March 2011, making it now over 10 years since the fantasy series has seen a new installment. With there being only three years between the release of the first book, The Name of the Wind, and the second, it’s understandable that fans are wondering if The Doors of Stone will ever come out.

Fortunately, we have been receiving updates from Rothfuss on his writing process, but the bad news is that it doesn’t sound like The Doors of Stone will be finished anytime soon. Of course, there have been rumors about when we can expect the third book to drop. There have even been reports that it will be released this summer. Well, we don’t expect that to happen, but let’s get into why people think that.

When is The Doors of Stone coming out?

While we don’t have a confirmed release date for The Doors of Stone yet, here’s what the rumor mill is saying. An eagle-eyed Redditior shared three years ago that they discovered a pre-order date for the book on Amazon.de of July 2021. Quickly, people began replying in the thread to explain that sometimes Amazon and other sites will use a date placeholder when a confirmed release date isn’t available. This was likely the case here.

More recently, Stanford Arts Review reported this year that The Doors of Stone was confirmed by Amazon to be debuting in 2021. Given there is no evidence to support this, we’re going to assume perhaps this site was tricked by the book-selling company as well.

About a month ago, a Redditor shared a much-needed PSA to the Kingkiller Chronicle subreddit, urging people not to pay attention to supposed release dates from Amazon, Goodreads, or any other book sites, as they are likely inaccurate.

As for what Rothfuss is saying, he’s been open in his Twitch live streams about how difficult it’s been to get through The Doors of Stone. In a recent one, the Quill Award winner admitted he’s a “perfectionist” and has been reworking parts of the story to get it just right. It doesn’t look like he’s got a projected release date in mind, and so we probably shouldn’t either.

We’ll keep you updated on any other rumors that come along regarding the release of The Doors of Stone, but at the end of the day, we should really just listen to what Patrick Rothfuss is saying. At least he’s keeping us in the loop nearly every step of the way.
