Few names in horror come are as legendary as director George A. Romero’s, best known for his six “of the dead” movies beginning with Night of the Living Dead in 1968 all the way through Survival of the Dead (2009). Before passing away of lung cancer in 2017, he was working on the seventh and final installment of his beloved series, Twilight of the Dead. Now, his wife Suzanne Romero has quietly been working to bring it to the big screen!

Romero’s movies have endured because of the social issues they tackle. Night of the Living Dead was revolutionary at the time and inspired countless writers to build on his “zombie” creation. His enormous influence can be seen in movies, TV shows, games, comics, and novels. For instance, think of things like The Walking Dead or Zack Snyder’s upcoming Army of the Dead, to name just two. These days, we can’t escape the zombie.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Suzanne Romero has been working with screenwriters Paolo Zelati, Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas to bring the undead world back to life. Details are scarce, but Twilight of the Dead has this haunting logline: “The story is set in a decimated world. Life has all but disappeared. But there still may be hope for humanity.”

“I gave him my full blessing as long as I could be there every step of the way for it to remain true to George’s vision,” Suzanne Romero said of the project. “We had a solid treatment and the beginning of the script. I can 100 percent say that George would be incredibly happy to see this continue. He wanted this to be his final stamp on the zombie genre.”

"This is the film he wanted to make and while someone else will carry the torch as the director, it is very much a George A. Romero film."

How will Twilight of the Dead connect to the rest of George A. Romero’s zombie movies?

While Romero’s movies were all part of the “of the dead” series, none of them really connected, at least not in the way we’ve become accustomed to with modern franchises. Each was a standalone zombie flick and can easily be watched without seeing any other. There are a few small connections between some, such as Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead. And from the sound of it, the upcoming movie will link to Land of the Dead.

At the end of Land of the Dead, intelligent zombie leader Big Daddy takes a horde of zombies on the road. Where they go is left to the imagination. Zelati reveals this is the starting point for the final movie: “Everything started with my question to him: ‘Where do the zombies go at the end of Land of the Dead?'”

There’s no word on when Twilight of the Dead will release. I’m sure zombie fans will be flooding to theaters when it does. While we wait, why not catch up on Romero’s previous works? That said, if you watch anything zombie-related you’re watching something inspired by his movies.
