Supergirl showrunner wants a Midvale spin-off to happen

Supergirl is currently airing its sixth and final season, but showrunner Jessica Queller has some ideas on how the story can continue after that.

Back in Season 3, we saw the first flashback episode, “Midvale,” which gave us a glimpse at young Alex (Olivia Nikkanen) and young Kara Danvers (Izabela Vidovic). It was one of the first times we truly got to understand the bond these two sisters share.

Flash forward to the most recent episode of Supergirl when we found ourselves back in Midvale. Not only did we get to see the young Midvale girls again, but we got a young Cat Grant (shoutout to actor Eliza Helm for finding the sassy, bratty essence of Cat Grant that Calista Flockhart brings to the adult version).

Basically, if there was ever an experimental backdoor pilot, “Prom Night!” was it. And that’s exactly the Supergirl spin-off Queller would love to see if there’s ever going to be one. “I’m really attached to the Midvale girls, to the flashback episodes [with] young Kara and young Alex and young Cat Grant,” she told The Wrap. “I think that would be a great spinoff.”

We think so too.

Will there be a Supergirl spin-off?

Currently, there are no plans to make a Supergirl spin-off, but Queller is all for it. “I loved the idea when the writers said [they were going to] do this episode in Midvale,” she said. “I thought it was brilliant and I think it’s really touching story of sisterhood. You get to see a lot of history between Alex and Kara that we’ve only ever alluded to. We had a flashback in Season 1, but this one goes further and is really touching and intimate and sentimental for these two women. And, just to show how close they really are and how unbreakable their bond is, which I love.”

Whether or not The CW will actually run with this idea remains to be seen. However, we will see a new and different version of Supergirl on the big screen next year in the standalone Flash movie. Sasha Calle (The Young and the Restless) is set to take on the role, and we’re excited to see what she brings to it. Since we’ve seen Melissa Benoist play the role of Supergirl magnificently for the last few years, it’ll take some getting used to.

Back to The CW, a Midvale spinoff could fit nicely into the larger Arrowverse. Perhaps there could even be a Supergirl crossover ahead of time. In fact, Brec Bassinger, who plays Stargirl on The CW series, is totally down for a crossover with Supergirl. In an interview with TVGuide last May, Bassinger said that “[j]ust the names in general kind of lend them to needing to work together.”

Of course, it’s important to remember this interview took place nearly a year ago, and Bassinger was probably alluding to Benoist’s Supergirl. We didn’t learn that Supergirl season 6 would be the final season until a few months later in September 2020, so she was likely under the impression that Benoist and her had more time to team up.

But just because Benoist is on her way out doesn’t mean that a potential Midvale-centric spinoff couldn’t still find a way to connect with Stargirl. If anyone can find a way to warp time, it’s the Arrowverse, so we’ll let them figure it out when the time comes.
