The Old Guard — Netflix

Charlize Theron heads up this Netflix movie about a group of immortal warriors who have dedicated their eternal lives to helping people. Beyond their immortality, the members of the Old Guard don’t technically have any superpowers, but they’ve been doing what they’re doing for hundreds of years and gotten extremely good at it. The fight scenes here have a grit and immediacy that feels more brutal and personal than some of the other series on this list, and it ends up that long life can be used against those blessed with it in some horribly creative ways.

Theron holds the movie together with her performance as Andromache of Scythia, Andy for short. Once again we’ve got an Academy Award winner in a lead role, which tells you how far superhero movies have come since the days when Adam West was bam-smack-pow-ing baddies across the small screen as Batman. You can count on pretty much all of these series to deliver when it comes to production value.

The Old Guard isn’t interested in subverting the typical superhero story; it just provides a new spin on it. This next show, on the other hand…
