Anson Mount is happy to be back at work after the pandemic shut down productions round the world for a year. In a recent interview with RadioTimes.com, he talked about his new movie The Virtuoso and provided an update on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, where he plays lead character Captain Pike.

Mount says that Strange New Worlds is about halfway through filming the first season. “It’s been one of the smoothest starts I think I’ve ever had in television.”

That said, pandemic protocols have changed everything about set life. “Normally I’d be throwing barbecues,” he said, noting that he can’t gather with other cast members as he’d like. “COVID [protocol] makes everything take longer, but you get through it and it’s weird trying to get to know my cast only on set.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 halfway through filming

The pandemic has been challenging across the board. Star Trek: Picard is reportedly filming seasons 2 and 3 back to back to make up for production delays. Strange New Worlds recently avoided a setback when a guest star needed to be quarantined, but contact was limited and it didn’t stop production from moving forward.

Mount is excited about the upcoming series, which will follow a more episodic style with standalone adventures taking precedence over big overarching stories that span entire seasons. Like Star Trek: The Original Series, Strange New Worlds will follow a “big idea of the week” format that will make it stand out from Picard or Star Trek: Discovery.

This is welcome news for fans who have longed for the kinds of stories that can be wrapped up in a single episode. While there is always a place for big stories, there’s something to be said about having a tightly written tale that has a distinct beginning, middle and end.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is generating a lot of buzz from fans eager to see something new  from Star Trek, but also keep the sense of the familiar.
