Ewan McGregor is hard at work filming Obi-Wan Kenobi, a series all about the character he played in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. The show will be set after Revenge of the Sith but before A New Hope, so we’re probably talking about Obi-Wan’s adventures on Tatooine during his exile, while young Luke Skywalker is growing up nearby.

Or are we? In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, McGregor hinted that the show may not go in the direction fans are expecting, at least not sartorially. “The costume is probably slightly different than you might expect,” he said.

Now, that could mean that Obi-Wan’s classic white-and-robe getup has a slightly different hem line. But I’m betting McGregor is hinting at something a little more substantial. Maybe the show won’t take place entirely on Tatooine, as I think a lot of fans are expecting, and Obi-Wan might have to strap on more heavy-duty gear to go into deep space, or maybe he has to wear a disguise to go undercover; we know the series will feature the return of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, after all, and we can’t see the two of them duking it out on Tatooine. If Vader knew that’s where Obi-Wan was hiding out this whole time, wouldn’t he have done something about it?

Either that, or Obi-Wan will wear a sundress. I’ll be happy with any of these options.

Ewan McGregor filmed a scene for Obi-Wan Kenobi with “someone very special”

And that wasn’t the only cryptic hint McGregor was offering. I got to play a very special scene on May the 4th with someone very special in my life.” He wouldn’t say who this was, only that they weren’t related to him and that he doesn’t think they’d ever appeared on camera with him before. Any guesses?

Beyond the hints, it sounds like filming is going smoothly. “It was good. It feels great. I have to say I’m having a really good time,” McGregor said. “To go back into the role, shall we say, is great. It’s all still layered, it feels good. There are great scripts, and great people to work with. It’s great. I’m having a good time.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2022.
