WandaVision writer explains scrapped Monica Rambeau storyline
In the months since WandaVision concluded on Disney+, the hit sitcom-inspired show continues to spark discussion. While Wanda’s grief-fueled actions were at the heart of the story, other characters had full arcs.
The infamous”snap” moment in Infinity War saw Thanos erase exactly half of all life, later restored by the Avengers in Endgame. On Earth, it’s known as “The Blip.” Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Paris) vanished in the Blip, and in the five years she was gone, her mother Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) passed away from cancer. It’s heartbreaking when she learns of her mother’s passing after returning. According to head writer Jac Schaeffer, WandaVision was originally going to further explore how this affects Monica.
“My pitch was mapped to the stages of grief, it ended up being kind of a reductive thing,” Schaeffer said on Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist Podcast. “I don’t know if you know this or not, Teyonah, but had a therapist in the base, the pop-up base. There were therapy scenes because we, in the room, were very pro-therapy. We saw this show as being really, truly, about mental health.”
"We were like, ‘Well, we’ve got to have a therapist,’ and then realized that there’s not a lot of time in the pop-up base for Monica to be stepping into her sessions at all."
It definitely would’ve been nice to see the show tackle grief from Monica’s perspective. Maybe they’ll do it in the future. Her next Marvel appearance will likely be in The Marvels (basically Captain Marvel 2) in November 2022.
