Uhtred’s hands and fluffy puppies: Behind the scenes of The Last Kingdom season 5

Recently, it was announced the upcoming fifth season of The Last Kingdom would be its last, and although we’re sad to see it go, before it does we have plenty of behind-the-scenes images to keep us warm at night.

But before we get to that, Deadline brings us the news that actor Ewan Horrocks has joined the cast, playing King Edward’s second son Aelfweard. We already see seeds of conflict  being sewn between Aelfweard and Edward’s first born son Aethelstan, played by fellow newcomer Harry Gilby. Only one will rule in the event of Edward’s death, and both have powerful allies.

With that said, let’s move on to a more important (and spoiler-free) topics: Uhtred’s hands!

Alexander Dreymon (Uhtred) jokingly shared the above images of his hands from set, shockingly revealing that ninth century man Uhtred is not big on hygiene. Neither are some people in this century, but whatever.

Elsewhere, Ruby Hartley (Stiorra), shared a pair of images to her Instagram Stories of co-stars Harry Gilby (Aethelstan) and onscreen brother Finn Elliot (Young Uhtred).

Hartley also shared a pair of images of herself in costume as Stiorra, who when last we left her was getting seen leaving with Danish warlord Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson):

And another of herself alongside her trusty steed:

Not to be outdone, Brida (Emily Cox) showed off her new ride:

Perhaps it was the new luxurious steed that has Brida in such a good mood. Here she is shining alongside onscreen nemesis Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth).

Either way, Brida’s new look for season 5 is rather fierce:

Fellow Dane Jeppe Beck Laursen (Haesten) snapped a pic of his Yorkshire Terrier Solo standing amid the set for Eoforwic. Eoforwic was handed over to Sigtryggr at the conclusion of season 4, so it appears we will see how the young ruler rules.

Solo wasn’t the only pup making a splash, as Butterworth and Hartley collectively lost their minds (rightfully so) over this dog:

And finally, James Northcote (Aldhelm), long the premiere purveyor of behind-the-scenes shots from The Last Kingdom, pokes fun at us or himself or something…it’s very meta:

One day we’re sure to see all the shots Northcote has been snapping, but for now these will have to do.

The Last Kingdom season 5 is set to continue filming throughout the summer, which hopefully means we see the show’s final season sometime this winter. Destiny is all!
