7. Female friendships: It’s a girl’s world

After years of women in fiction competing and feuding with one another, it’s been refreshing to see mainstream television become more inclusive when it comes to female friendships. The first season of Shadow and Bone falls somewhere in the middle on this; while Alina and Inej have some sweet moments together, Alina and Genya’s (Daisy Head) friendship ends in betrayal and Zoya’s (Sujaya Dasgupta) initial reactions to Alina are straight out of the Mean Girls playbook.

However, the season finale changed the nature of Alina and Zoya’s relationship, if only slightly, and book fans know that this will mark a shift heading into a second season. Not only will these two begin to change their tone about one another, but Siege and Storm also goes a way towards bridging the new divide between Genya and Alina, offering fans a resolution.

The season finale of Shadow and Bone also suggests Nina will be joining the Crows in Ketterdam in season 2, meaning we’ll be getting one of Bardugo’s best-written friendships: Nina and Inej. There’s no time for backstabbing and gossiping in the chaotic underbelly of the Barrel, and these two look out for one another at every turn in the books. If the show places the same emphasis on their friendship, it’ll be a joy to watch.
