8 books and comics to read before watching Loki on Disney+

The new Disney+ series Loki is just around the corner. Luckily, you don’t have to wait until its June premiere to get your fill of the God of Mischief. There are plenty of comics and books starring Loki that will tide you over until then. Check out our favorites below!

1. Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers by Rob Rodi and Esad Ribic — $17

Originally published in 2004, this 152-page comic book tells the story of Loki’s rise to become ruler of Asgard. And since the whole thing is told from his troubled perspective, readers get a glimpse into his complex feelings for his brother Thor and their father, Odin. This captivating story features beautifully painted artwork by Esad Ribic, who Marvel fans will know from his current stint on the latest Eternals comic.

2. Loki: Agent of Asgard Volume 1: Trust Me by Al Ewing — $17

This volume comprises the first five issues of Loki: Agent of Asgard as he takes on missions for All-Mother, including a heist of Avengers Tower. In this book, fans will discover a different side of Loki as he takes on new challenges and tries to create a team to plumb the dungeons of Asgardia.

3. Loki: The God Who Fell to Earth by Daniel Kibblesmith — $16

This book features Loki, now king of the Frost Giants, coming to Earth and being forced into a battle of wits against Iron Man himself, Tony Stark. The book is has a great confrontation with the (criminally underrated) Marvel villain, Nightmare.

4. Vote Loki by Christopher Hastings — $9

In this comic book, Loki, the god of lies, tries to run for President of the United States. With his smile and charisma, Loki tries to sway the American media in this political satire of the 2016 election. Eagle-eyed fans will notice the artwork in these comics looks eerily similar to some of the costumes shown in the Loki trailer.

5. Loki: Where Mischief Lies by Mackenzi Lee –$13

Before he became Thor’s nemesis, Loki was just a kid trying to prove himself to everyone. In this book, he wants to be a hero when it seems everyone thinks he’s a villain — that is, everyone except for Amora. This sorceress-in-training sees a different side of Loki, but when she’s banished from Asgard, Loki is anguished until he’s sent to Earth to investigate some mysterious murders.

6. Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman — $10

New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman needs no introduction. And anyone who’s read his work knows just how much he’s influenced by Norse mythology. Well, it was only a matter of time before Gaiman literally wrote the book on Norse myth, and it’s essential reading for anyone interested in the subject. If you’re a Marvel fan looking to discover Loki’s roots, Gaiman’s Norse Mythology is an excellent place to start.

7. American Gods: A Novel by Neil Gaiman — $12

Gaiman created his own take on fictionalized Norse mythology in American Gods. Not only will fans find Loki, a.k.a. Low-Key Lyesmith, in this book, but you’ll also run across familiar faces like Odin and the West African god Anansi in this compelling, contemporary tale.

8. Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard Box Set by Rick Riordan — $37

Author Rick Riordan became well-known due to his Percy Jackson book series, which is based on Greek mythology. Now he’s taken on Norse mythology with his book trilogy Mangus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. Though these books are intended for readers aged 10 to 14, it doesn’t mean you can try them out yourself and see how Loki messes with Mangus.
