Harry Potter movies available to watch again on HBO Max…for now
By Dan Selcke
Although Warner Bros. produced the the Harry Potter movies, they don’t live permanently on HBO Max…yet. They are back for a limited time, though.
The streaming wars are all about content. Disney has The Mandalorian and WandaVision, Netflix has Stranger Things and Bridgerton, HBO Max has…the Friends reunion special, I guess?
But it’s not all about originals. HBO Max is the exclusive home of popular shows like Game of Thrones, which definitely helps buoy it. Other old properties float around. Take the Harry Potter movies, for instance; given how beloved they are, any streaming service would kill to have those eight films available to watch. The Harry Potter movies were produced by Warner Bros., so you’d figure they’d only be available on HBO Max. And maybe someday that’ll be true, but Warner Bros. contracted them out to other providers years before the streaming wars heated up, probably not realizing what a hot commodity they would become.
The result: the Harry Potter movies are available to watch on NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, of all places. Peacock is usually free to watch, but NBCUniverse knows what it has with the Harry Potter movies; viewers have to pay an extra fee to get to them.
But now, the Harry Potter movies are also available again on HBO Max…for June 2021 and not a moment longer. So if you’re an HBO Max subscriber and feel like visiting Hogwarts, best do it while you can.
This sort of content tug of war is common in the streaming wars. Everyone wants to win the battle, and the Harry Potter films are a valuable weapon.
