When Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat played the Doctor, sort of

Former Doctor Who showrunner once got to read for the role of the Doctor during the table read of one of the show’s most iconic episodes, “Blink.”
Doctor Who made blinking something to be scared of when it released the season 3 episode “Blink.” It’s one of the most memorable and beloved episodes of the series to date, and now we have a fun story to go along with it.
Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat took to Instagram and shared a fun tidbit in honor of the 14th anniversary of the episode. During a table read for the 2007 episode, Moffat actually “played” the role of the Doctor.
He posted a picture of a weeping angel statue he has in his garden (isn’t he scared of that thing?!) and told the story. “At the ‘Blink’ read-through I read the part of the Doctor. I was GREAT! People wept. [Showrunner Russell T Davies] slapped me. I’m sure he meant it as a compliment. As a direct consequence of that readthrough, Carey Mulligan became an international star. And I moved on to doing the stage directions.”
It’s easy to forget that Carey Mulligan was a little-known actor on Doctor Who before she went on to super-stardom. Thanks, Steven!
Moffat was one of the biggest creative influences behind Doctor Who from season 5 to 10, when he served as showrunner. He’s moved on from the series since then, but he’ll always be associated with it.
In fact, during the pandemic, Moffat was a huge part of creating new and inspiring stories for fans during a difficult time. One short story, “The Best of Days,” highlighted not only the Black Lives Matter movement but touched on the coronavirus pandemic. It’s Moffat’s latest piece of Doctor Who writing to date.
So while we may not see Moffat returning to the series anytime soon, or perhaps ever, we can always expect to see some Doctor Who throwback or fun story on his social media. We’ll take it!
